Data brokers, from the official records
United StatesSeveral states require companies that buy and sell personal information to register every year and answer questions about what they collect and who they sell it to. We turn those registries and the laws behind them into readable records, with the source and the date for every number.
What we record
- Who is registered as a data broker in each state registry, and how the list changes.
- What each broker disclosed: precise location data, sales to foreign entities, to the federal government, to law enforcement, to developers of generative AI.
- How many deletion and opt-out requests brokers reported, where the registry asks for it.
- The deletion and opt-out laws: what they cover, the deadlines, and the official way to use them.
- The date we downloaded each file, and a link to it.
How we work
We download the registries from the state agencies that publish them and count what they contain ourselves. We quote laws and regulations from official sources. We report what a company disclosed in its registration; we do not characterize companies or make claims about their conduct beyond the public record.
Every page carries the date it was last checked, so you can judge how current it is. Read more about our approach on the about page.
